Jennifer Lopez is really coming for all the other pop girls’ crowns. First, the multi-hyphenate hopped on the ever-trendy Y2K aesthetic by reminding everyone that she, in fact, was the Y2K aesthetic with the announcement that she was remaking her classic Ben-Affleck-inspired album This Is Me...Then. This morning, she struck again by revealing that the album—fittingly titled This Is Me...Now—would also be paired with a film “inspired” by the music that will invite audiences into an “immersive world where music and visuals intertwine.” To reiterate: look out, everyone else. (Also... was 2002 J.Lo a witch? Did she foresee her return to pop stardom in a crystal ball and write a past-tense album title to give herself the perfect comeback fodder? We need some answers stat, Jennifer.)
The “On The Floor” singer announced the visual album in a lush preview that opens with the following voiceover: “When I was a little girl, when someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer was always ‘in love.’” And that’s all while she sits in a mansion soaking wet in a luxe ball gown. We are, truly, so back.
“Hear it. See it. Live it,” the trailer continues, before launching into a short but punchy montage befitting of her status as the queen of romcoms. There’s dancing! Singing! High-speed vehicles! A Singin’ In The Rain homage! Welding! And that’s all in an approximately five-second clip.
“This Is Me...Now” is the defining era of Jennifer Lopez’s illustrious career,” J.Lo’s team wrote in a statement. “With an unprecedented rawness and vulnerability, Lopez has crafted a powerful and heartfelt homage to the profound beauty of true love and the indomitable strength of the human spirit. What began as a return to the recording studio after an almost decade long absence, and inspired by love, evolved into a vision to weave her songs into an abstract biography reverse engineered from the powerful music she had written, recorded and produced.”
“We may think we know the story of Lopez, one of the most written about women in the world, but this powerful and heartfelt work of art shares the real story, a piece of her soul, and she is doing it in her own inimitable style,” the statement continues.
The film is directed by Dave Meyers, and written by Jennifer Lopez, Matt Walton and Ben Affleck. It premieres February 16 on Prime Video, along with the full album. The album’s first single, titled “Can’t Get Enough,” will be available January 10.
