Come with me and you’ll be in a world of box office domination: Wonka, the upbeat, Timothée Chalamet-starring reboot of the beloved candy-movie franchise has opened at the top of the box office by a wiiiiide margin, making $39 million in its debut. That’s way more than The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes, which made $5.8 million and has been hanging in second place for a long time (it’s in its fifth week and has made $145 million). Despite getting a wider rollout, Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy And The Heron fell to third with $5 million (and $23 million after two weeks). Two films about mankind’s hubris round out the top five, with Godzilla Minus One making $4.8 million and Trolls Band Together making $4 million.

The bottom half of the top 10 is remarkably similar to last week, with Wish still in sixth place, Napoleon still in seventh (they’ve both been out for four weeks had have both made around $55 million), and The Shift still in 10th. There is a technical newcomer, though, with Poor Things rocketing up the charts after expanding to more screens, even though it’s still playing on fewer than 100. It only made $1.2 million, but it got a better per-screen average than Wonka. That doesn’t really mean anything, and history has shown that it doesn’t mean the movie will continue making more money as it expands to more theaters, but there’s only so much to say about these movies. Should we do more of “Pure Imagination”? How about: “If you want to view Wonka, simply buy a ticket and see it. Any snack you want to, eat it. Want to see Wonka? There’s nothing to it.” See? Bad.
